Thumbs up Book exchange: The Road, by Cormac McCarthy

The Road is a story about post-apocalyptic survival, about dealing with a calamity that destroys much of the world's living things. As a result, civilization has gone awry. It is harsh, stark and brutal ... as many of McCarthy's books are. In some ways, it's the story of "Mad Max," but done properly. McCarthy grabs your head with both hands and has you see what he sees, in a way few other authors achieve.

It's TEOTWAWKI at its finest. Cormac McCarthy is an exceptional writer. He penned No Country For Old Men, among others. If you either read the book or saw the film, this story is somewhat similar in its style and substance.

This is a great novel, I think. Fairly short, but rich enough to take some time to digest. Plenty of details about the simple realities of the situation to scare the hell out of anyone who hasn't seriously considered what could happen.

Note: I just realized that The Road has now been made into a film, to be released in the autumn of 2009, starring Robert Duvall, Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. Film overview. I've had the book for awhile, now. It's worth filming, absolutely.

I'll be finishing the book in the next several days. When I am done, I would like to pass it along to someone.

The deal: If you're ready to read a new story now and you'll pass it along to someone else when you're done, then this book's for you. The first DC member to say "I'll take it" gets it.

Great Book, possibly the darkest thing I've ever read.

I'm a big fan of the author, looking forward to the movie

If you think The Road is dark (and it is - I'm re-reading it right now), read Blood Meridian.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

I read the book several years ago ad was wondering when somebody would make it into a movie, because while brutal, it is a great read....
