New to guns
Hi folks,
I'm a 33 year old nerd who has just purchased his first handgun (XD 45 4" Compact) and is very happy with it. I have no prior firearms training or experience. I'm in the process of learning about the proper use of my weapon, acquainting myself with the laws in my state with respect to self defense, and registering for my CHP.
Not really much else to say. I hope to do more reading than posting to start with. So much to learn!

Welcome from Virginia.
Step 1: Acquire the tool.
Step 2: Train. But train wisely. There is a significant difference between training to shoot holes in a bullseye, and training to prevail on the street and in your home.

Timid people sleep peacefully at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Welcome from another Floridian. Nice choice of weapon!
I have the XD45 Service model and can think of nothing else I would rather have purchased. It has been good to me for three years now.
I also suggest you buy something smaller in caliber, .22LR or a 9mm for target practice. Ammo for the .45acp is getting expensive and hard to locate sometimes.
Just remember, treat the gun as if it is ALWAYS loaded and be safe!
