Could have sworn I had done this already. Turns out it was at another site that I did. Better late than never?
I'm in Northern Utah and am into EDC gear, Ham radio, emergency preparedness, and the right to carry and defend.
I'm new to carrying. My CFP should be showing up in the mailbox any day now. I've been carrying open for the last 6-7 weeks with only good experiences. While I do like open carrying (even from a public education standpoint) I'm looking forward to being able CC. Open carry can be a pain in the rear when you are stuck having to make sure you're not ever concealing.
I think my good experiences are mostly due to my young family. I think it's hard for people to assume that a guy OC'ing while walking through a store with his wife and children is going to be a threat. I don't go out much else besides going to work I guess. I decided to poke my head in at a political rally a few weeks ago and got many compliments on OC'ing. I had never been to one before and it wasn't all bad. ;)
I believe that educating the public about the right for people to carry and the benefits on society is something we should all be encouraging and participating. Sitting quiet with a CCW in your pocket is only enough to protect yourself and doesn't help to protect your 2nd amendment rights.
I also believe that people who choose to carry ought to educate themselves to at least the level of LEO's, if not more. The responsibility lies on us to understand our weapons, the damage they are actually capable of causing, the laws that affect us, and the consequences of our choice to carry.
I've been lurking for many weeks and I like the community here. Everyone is rather respectful to each other but you can't let people try to smash down opposing opinions because newcomers need to see things from various angles to make educated decisions. It's easy to forget that when you're not a newbie anymore.
