    "Youngster" new to carrying

Well, I'm a "young fella" from MT that has just recently acquired 2 handguns. A S&W Sigma 9mm given to me by my parents for my 18th birthday (still got a couple weeks till the actual b-day), and a Taurus PT140 MilPro won by my father at an NRA banquet on Saturday. So far I've only carried a .22 while hunting and the other day I took the 9mm out OC in a rural area while helping a friend of mine with some ranch work, so no real experience as of yet. I have yet to shoot the .40, but I'm getting pretty proficient with my 9mm.

I do plan on applying for my CWP on my 18th birthday, and hopefully won't have any problems getting one (local anti-gun sheriff, unfortunately). My father was in law enforcement most of his life and has been on the City PD, Sheriff's Department, Highway Patrol, and even worked as a Correctional Officer for several years. He taught me everything I know and I have already put that to use by becoming a state certified 4H Shooting Sports instructor in three disciplines: rifle, pistol, and archery. Currently looking into cowboy action, but gotta get the county to approve that one.

I'm headed to town tomorrow to get a holster for the .40, which will be my summer carry (once I get proficient with it, of course), probably primarily OC, but occasionally CC for events and such. Any advice for someone just getting started carrying? I've been trying to do as much research as I can to make sure I stay safe and within my rights, while at the same time making sure they aren't violated, but I figure the best way to learn is to ask people who may have experienced an encounter with a local LEO.

Welcome aboard, the best way to learn is to read as much of the stuff on here you can. Having the proper training, knowledge, and mindset, are far more important than what gun someone carries.

Don't you have to be 21 to conceal carry?

Not in his state. Plus, MT accepts CCW permits from almost every freaking state. Pretty cool.

Thanks! I've been researching for months now preparing for this and have had safe firearms handling drilled into my head since I was 4 and saw what a .357 does to a watermelon.

Not in MT. You can legally obtain a CWP at 18 and can OC without a permit at 14. The only thing I know of having to be 21 for is to purchase a handgun from an FFL. For private purchases and legitimate gifts you only have to be 18.

Connecticut is sounding worse and worse everytime I log onto this site. haha. Well my mistake. Congrats!
I'm new as well. Took my permit class a month after turning 21, and just bought my first two pistols a few months ago. I'm still getting used to carrying. When I get out of my car or stand up in a public place I tend to run my hand over my shirt to make sure it didn't ride up over the IWB holster. Haha

One piece of well intentioned advice, if your going to concealed carry, really be concealed. Don't confuse it with open carry. In the wrong place it can really get you in trouble. Uneducated and/or crazy people have been known to attack people with guns because they see them as a 'nut with a gun'. They won't be aware and/or won't care about your legal right to carry.

    Congratulations, good luck.

Welcome to the DC Forum from Delaware! It sounds like you are doing all the right things to get started. Ask any questions you may have at this forum and you will probably get some good advice. Take that advice with a grain of salt and sift it through your own good judgement. Stay safe!
