Hello from OC, California!
New to this forum, so I just wanted to step in and say hi. Long story short on my love affair with guns:
My father-in-law, a 30-year LE vet who retired as captain, passed down one of his old pistols to me -- a S&W Model 645 -- a few years back at Christmas. At the time, I'd only been shooting 2-3 times...EVER. But he knew I loved it and so he gave me my first gun! It was empowering because I've always felt a strong urge to learn proper gun handling techniques to protect my wife and two daughters in the home. So I became obsessed (can anyone relate?) with getting better. I took courses, read everything I could find and went shooting more often (still do all these things!). Last summer, my father-in-law got me a birthday gift -- an M&P .45. For Christmas? Membership to the local range! I know, I'm blessed.
Working on saving up for my first "compact" 1911 -- a SA Ultra Compact -- with an eye toward TRYING to get my CCW permit. As you know, that's tough here in CA. I don't feel it's a necessity but will bring added peace of mind the way having a loaded weapon in my home does. Gotta protect my ladies!
Anyway, glad to be on here. I hope to learn a lot from you veteran shooters!

I'd rather have my gun and not need it than need my gun and not have it.

Welcome to the forum Swipes. Congradulations for your birtday present. I am fortunate to live in Stanislaus County where it is relatively easy to obtain a ccw. Please keep us informed on your quest to obtain your ccw.
