First step, if you're new to armed defense and haven't already done so, check out some reading materials:
- In The Gravest Extreme, by M. Ayoob. It's about as good an introduction to the pros, cons and responsibilities of defensive carry as you're likely to see. A bit dated, but very worthwhile.
- The Truth About Self Protection, by M. Ayoob.
- Principles of Personal Defense, by J. Cooper.
- The Gift of Fear, by G. DeBecker. A bit of an anti-gunner, but fairly accurate regarding basic mindset, awareness and reading others.
- For a heavier dive into mindset and mental preparation, check LtC (ret) David Grossman's books.
There are a number of good recommendations in the Defensive Books/Videos forum.
