Welcome aboard. Mighty glad to have ya'. But get ready, if you ask for opinions on the "best defensive .45 for myself" you'll be surprised to discover that .45s often magically turn into; .357 revolvers, high-cap 9mm, .357 sigs & mouse guns! You are now in the Opinionation Zone.

    Welcome from Wisconsin!

I have no opinions(lol) on which .45 is best. I carried a Colt 1911 at times in the Army until they switched to Berretta 9 MM & some that I had were quite good. As a Senior NCO I could get a good one by just asking, lol. My son has a Glock 21 & likes it a lot. There are many manufacturers that make many different .45 cal pistols, 1911 types & others. Find one that fits you & that you can shoot well. As far as shooting well, unless you can rent some at a range you won't know until you put many rounds through it. You can adapt to almost anything that's on the market through training & familiarity.

    Good luck!
