Welcome from South Carolina...
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.
Hello, MountainMamma, and welcome from Missouri to this great forum. Good folks & LOTS of info here - enjoy! Check out the concealed carry weapon threads, and I believe there are some sub-forums and thread entries specific to women that may help. Good luck with your choice, and take care!

Sounds like your WAY back inthe woods, But if you get the opportuninty to go to a indoor range, many rent guns and you can try before you buy, and see what works best for you before you buy it. Welcome to the forum.

yes, find an indoor range, and rent some different guns. or better yet, find a friend with a lot of guns who would be willing to let you test some out.
i like glocks. accurate accurate and corrosion resistant. perfect for cc. i would also recommend starting your cc process now. i have a friend that has his permit but is still trying to decide on a pistol.

The situation will NEVER BE THE WAY YOU WANT, it WILL BE THE WAY IT IS. You must be FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ADAPT and just "DEAL WITH IT".
As someone mentioned a .357 magnum might be what you are looking for. As for a jogging holster you might want to check out Kangaroo Carry

By thinking a "slide" might be better than a "lever action" when referring to handguns, can I assume you mean an autoloading pistol rather than a revolver? If this is the case, something in a .40 or .45 caliber would be appropriate for Bear and "social work". Lots of pistol choices in both of these calibers, including compact and sub-compact options that are easy to carry concealed.
Whatever choice you make, be sure to spend the few extra bucks for something from a reputable manufacturer.... reliability should be at the top of your requirements list.
Once you've chosen a sidearm, please please please seek some kind of training beyond the NRA safety courses that most states require for a concealed carry permit and then practice regularly.
I know too many people who carry every day, yet have had no training... and they scare the hell out of me.
Best of luck and welcome to the group... lots of good folks here that will be happy to help you along your way.
