As far as a first gun, take a class that offers you the opportunity to try many different guns. That's the only way to know what's right for you. Guns are all preference.
Welcome from ne ohio
Long before a ccw class you need to know how to shoot. It is a great responsibility to carry a gun. If you already know how great then time for your class lol. What to carry. As has been said, there can be a best gun from each person who posts. I carry a ruger sr9c, got it on sale for less than 400 don't remember the exact price at fin, feather and fur. Nice to handle and because it is a 9mm ammo to practice is pretty cheap. Right now you can get blazer 115 g for 10.99 a box of 50 at fin feather and fur. It will hold 17 + 1 and that is pretty darn nice. Very little recoil. I carry speer gold dot short barrel 124 g in it for my carry ammo.

Hello BurgetheGinger, and welcome from Missouri to this great forum - good folks and LOTS of info here! I have a Taurus PT709 Slim for CC and really like it - reliable so far with a variety of ammo, round and JHP, different grain sizes, and not bad at all on recoil for a small very concealable semi-auto. I also would look at the S&W M&P Shield in 9mm if you can find one - may be my next buy.
