Saying hello and asking for some honest opinions
Greetings folks. Just joined, though I've read a few threads in the past. Quick bio, live in Mi, Marine vet (obviously), father of 8. I'm planning on receiving my CPL in about a month, barring any unforseen issues, and am trying to decide on a personal carry. I am currently looking at a Colt Defender .45 with a 3 in. barrel. I'm curious to hear some opinions from people who have used this, or a similar, gun? Please no fanboy or hater gushing. Just personal, firsthand experiences. Thanks in advance.

I carried a full sized 1911 for a long time, although lately have moved more towards the Sig 220.
If you are going to be carrying a metal framed handgun, you need to invest in a good, purpose made gun belt, and a good holster, using the cheap stuff just isn't comfortable. Also, you need to dress appropriately to conceal any gun.
If you shoot the gun well, and it is reliable, then it should work for you.
Oh, and welcome aboard Jarhead.

Welcome. And the Defender is good, solid gun. I don't have one anymore, but I did once upon a time.
I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it.

Welcome from East Tennessee!! I carry an RIA compact 1911(3.5" barrel) daily. Ditto to the good belt and holster. It isn't uncomfortable for me and most that say it is have never tried it. Be safe!

Welcome aboard marinevet1994. Thank you for your service to our country, and greetings from the great state of Texas. A 1911 platform of some kind is in my future also. May be a 4inch barrel for easy concealment. The Colt should work for you just fine. Buckeye.45 gave you some good advice.

Lately been carrying a Colt officers 1911, with a DeSantis cozy partner IWB holster and 1 1/2 in DeSantis gun belt. Not a problem with weight or comfort, I pull it up close to my side. I wear an oversized shirt, so it just disappears.

Ideally...I'd opt for a .45 in Commander length with a lightweight alloy frame for every day carry.
That's what I would do iffen I was starting all over again from Square One and looking for a daily carry 1911.
