Defensive Carry in Northern New Mexico
Hi All,
I recently moved to Northern New Mexico, and between my rural location far from police or even many other people, and the rampant drug problem with associated crime here, I finally decided to get set up for defensive carry. I carry a Ruger SP101 openly in a running fanny pack thing with mesh pockets, from which I can draw easily, when jogging out in the desert. Around the house and out and about I keep a Colt New Agent on or in my belt with Comp-Tac CTAC and paddle holsters, respectively. I currently have an Arizona CCW license, honored here in NM, and am waiting for my NM license. Hopefully that will arrive next month. When I can't carry a gun, I carry a Tornado-type pepper spray system. Due to some issues with Colt's warranty turnaround times, I'm adding a Springfield Mil-spec 1911 to my collection as soon as the USPS gets it to my FFL, and depending on the situation may sometimes carry that instead of the New Agent. I practice out in the desert weekly on BLM lands, and by doing IDPA matches monthly.
I've been posting and reading on some 1911-specific forums for a while now, and occasionally have read stuff here, but decided it was time to join and post since many of my questions relate specifically to defensive carry. I hope to learn from you all and, when I can, contribute to the learning of others.

Freedom doesn't come free. It is bought and paid for by the lives and blood of our men and women in uniform.

I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it.

Welcome from AZ!
Sidearms are great, but if you're out in the boonies a long arm or two would be good to have on hand - like a shotgun and an AR.

Welcome from South Carolina...
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.
