I have no idea how this web site forum works

Do you have some sort of instructions as to where to begin?

I posted a message a few minutes ago - then received a message that I didn't read the rules!

Well, I checked the box about the rules box about 20 minutes ago

I suspect my first message was not valid?

    I'm totally lost....

Last question, How do I get responses to my questions or comments?

If you click on the <Home> link at the top of any forum page, you'll get to the top spot on DC.

From there, you'll see a few entries in the "Site Navigation" section (upper-left of the page). One of those links will be: FAQ ... frequently asked questions.

In the FAQ's, you'll see some information about how the forum works, how to post, etc. While it's not minutely detailed in all cases, it'll give you a pretty good idea.

And if you get stuck, just post a new comment in the Forum News, Feedback, Problems section.

Last question, How do I get responses to my questions or comments?
Whenever you get into a particular sub-forum where you want to post, just create a new comment via the "Post New Thread" button (located near the top of that forum. Once the comment has been posted, you can come back to the forum later to see how it's going. Others will eventually see that comment posted there, then post themselves. Over time, the thread will grow as more folks add their two cents.

Like in this discussion thread, actually. Your post came first, mine next, and so on.

Whatever else you do, head to the upper-right of any forum page to click on your own login name to see what's there. And click on the <Settings> link up there, too. In the <Settings> area, you'll get to alter a number of things about how the forum's going to react and appear during your sessions. You can customize many of the basic features, including privacy, the date-sequence in how the comments are displayed to you, and so on. It's good to go through all the settings, at minimum to get a feel for what you've got control over.

One thing to keep in mind: most anything you point your mouse at can be clicked on. Mouse-over (but don't click on) many of the images and apparent links you see, and a little pop-up message will indicate what it's for (in most cases). Feel free to head to the News/Problems sub-forum to play around, too. Create a new post, add a second post, quote your first post in order to create a third, go back to the second post so you can delete it (via the <Go Advanced> button), and so on. There are lots of little tricks to learn, but the basics are really easy to get down once you've posted a handful of times. Be brave ... try out the stuff you think you can click on. It won't bite.

Once you get comfortable, then you can start mulling the really big questions. Such as, how does someone get 12K posts, yet still remain sane and standing? For those "big" questions, you'll need to think very deeply ... and ask very nicely. And even then, it's tough to explain.

I posted a message a few minutes ago - then received a message that I didn't read the rules! Well, I checked the box about the rules box about 20 minutes ago. I suspect my first message was not valid?
Every newbie gets that. As do those folks who get slapped with infractions for minor violations of the forum rules. Read them ... know them ... live them. Plus, it's worthwhile to head back to the forum rules, from time to time, just for a refresher. Basically, keep posts on-track, be courteous and respectful, watch your language. Other than a few basic rules of the road, this is a wonderful place to kick around tough concepts, ones that aren't commonly discussed with everyone we meet.

Welcome to DC! Glad to have you.
