A new member from Arizona...
My name is Jb and I live with my wife of 22 years and our two English Bulldogs in Prescott, AZ. The only firearm I currently own is a Rem. Mag 870
with a few mods.
My wife owns and operates a pet grooming salon and handles cash daily. She doesn't feel comfortable with a 12ga. in her shop, so this is another reason
we are in the market for a couple of pistols.
She likes the feel of a Ruger lcr 38 Special. I also like it, but may go with one that fires a 357.....
Anyway, I'm no expert on firearms so I'll sit back watch and learn.

Welcome from Wisconsin, JB! You'll get lots of advice on what gun you should buy for protection right here on this site. Keep in mind that the smaller the gun the more recoil (as a rule) with a powerful round. I suggest that you get your wife to a range that rents guns & have her (and you) try some out of various sizes & calibers. If she can handle it there's nothing wrong with a revolver in .38/.357 or a semi-auto in 9MM or .40 cal.
Nothing beats a shotgun for intimidation, especially after the first round is fired, lol. Saw a few inches off the barrel & you don't even have to aim carefully.

I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it.

Welcome from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Before I forget, please don't follow all the guidance you find on here like "Saw a few inches off the barrel & you don't even have to aim carefully.", as that would make you a violator of federal law, and certainly not what you came here for right? :)
The little Ruger you have your eye on is a good first handgun. I like the .357 option as well, but know that you up your felt recoil significantly with full power loads in that short barrel revolver. Ruger don't make no junk though, so you can trust anything you buy from them. You've got a top shelf firearms training site (GUNSITE) right up the road from you, should you want to look into some serious training. Would be a nice day trip, if only to visit the onsite store.
Good thing about AZ, unless it's changed since I lived out there, you are free to open carry, so if you wanted a larger revolver or semi-auto pistol, you can strap it on and go about your business. Nice option in my view.
Be safe friend.
