Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

Greetings and welcome from the Space Coast of Central Florida.
I feel safer with the gun safely on my person rather than trying to hide it is a drawer somewhere, or even in some small gun safe. The 'hidden gun' just increases the mystery and attraction. Good luck on that decision.

Carry everywhere you can, better than never carrying. Baby steps, as you said. Have to keep the marriage strong. Some good info here and elsewhere about why you should carry everywhere legal/authorized (don't want to be kicking yourself or worse for not carrying when you could have been, and finding out too late you should have been).
As for the walk to work, I'm in the same boat, just not as far. There are alternatives: knife, kubotan, baton, pepper spray, etc. (be familiar with your state laws, etc.). Unarmed defense is a good supplement to CC. Otherwise you may only have one tool in your toolbox, and not every situation requires a hammer.
