Welcome from Oregon there is a lot of great people on this site with a lot of info so ask away and I am sure you will be able to get info to fit your needs
Hello, RDcobra, and welcome from Missouri to a really great forum. Good people and info here! Look at the SP2022 in 9mm. It's my main home self-defense handgun. Very high quality and value for the price. Extremely reliable - eats all kinds of ammo. Very managable recoil since it is a medium to large size handgun.
Since you are new to this handgun, self defense arena, consider taking some good self defense classes catered to your needs. I also recommend you check out the many free YouTube videos made by Massad Ayoob, a world-class instructor in handgun use and self defense, who has recorded training sessions in Judicious Use of Force, Shoot to Live, Home Invasion, Preparation for Home Defense, and What to Do After a Shooting. Just Google his name and these topics and the YouTubes should show up. Very good instructional information from an expert, and free.
Here is a very good technical review of self defense ammo:

Welcome from South Carolina...
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

I am now the proud owner of a S&W M&P 9c. I go to class tomorrow. I am more confident than I was, but still not fully mentally ready to Carry Concealed. I have faith that with time, education, and practice that will come too.
