Hello all. I will be taking my CHL class in a few days. I am kinda new to the handgun world and was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions or maybe point me in the right direction.
I have a Ruger Vaquero, CZ-P01, an old .38 revolver and an LC9. I want to get an LCP after I get my license. I really haven't shot them much at all - maybe twice a year starting about 3 years ago.

    1. How often should you clean a gun?
    2. Where can I find out how to clean a gun?
    3. When you buy a gun, do you usually do anything to it before first time firing?
    4. I have an electronic safe to hold my handguns. Can you recommend a less expensive (non-electronic) combination case that I could keep my gun during the day and maybe store under my bed? I would take it out at night and then put it back in the AM. I just don't want to wear out the electronic combo safe by using it every day. Does this sound like a good idea?
    5. I have 3 girls (2 of them teenagers and one that is 10). I showed the older 2 how to use a .38 revolver. They each have shot about 100 rounds total in the last couple of years. That's when I felt they were old enough. I keep the .38 locked in the electronic safe but it is in my closet and they are at the other end of the house. What would you recommend I do (if anything) to give them quick access but keep the little one out?

Sorry if these are already answered somewhere else - still new and trying to find my way around.

    Welcome...

    from Central Florida!

    1. I clean a firearm if I use it...if its been in the safe for months without use, I touch them up a bit, too.
    2. The iNet is your friend...different platforms require different methods. You buy a Glock...look up YouTube on how to clean a Glock...you have a CZ-P01, do the same. There is a ton of "how to's" for references.
    3. I always take a new/used gun and break it down prior to its first use...inspect it and clean it.
    4. Safes serve a great purpose...that is a heavy safe...now a metal box with a code or key is what I call a 'metal carrying case'. Something on your night stand to keep young hands out is fine, but when you leave the house, your guns should be in a larger safe that keeps quick B & E's away from your guns and other valuables. The price of a safe will certainly pay for itself if you were to be burglarized once.OMO
    5. I don't believe in kid proofing my guns (yes, I'm careful about who is around them, etc.), but it's more important to gun proof your kids. My grandchildren are 5 and 9...they both know about guns and gun safety. My 9 year old granddaughter is going to start shooting her own .22 pistol in a few weeks.

Others her will express different points of view, and give other suggestions...only YOU can decide when and how to teach your children about gun safety.
For starters, look up the NRA's "Eddie Eagle" vids on the iNet...it would be a good start.

    Here's some reading:

    Firearm Cleaning & Maintenance

The search feature here is really good. Start your question session there and if you dont find your exact answer, make a post. Its hard for people to answer a "list" of questions all in one post and be fair to your request. Great introduction, now enjoy the forums.

    Welcome from South Carolina...
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

You will probably get a lot more advice if you start individual threads for each of your questions in the appropriate forums.

    Welcome from Wisconsin!

I haven't said this for awhile but the best time to clean your guns is when your daughter brings her new boyfriend home. Also a good time to sharpen your knives.
