Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

Hello, MJClark, and welcome from Missouri to a great forum. Good people and info here! If you are going to concealed carry, consider the size and caliber you want to use. I like 9mm - cheaper ammo than others, and at least used to be relatively easy to get. There is a thread under the CCW subforum here about recommendations for small carry guns that you can check out. I personally use a Taurus 709 slim and Kahr K9 as my CCWs. Also considered Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm and CZ RAMI alloy version.
Since you are new to this handgun, self defense arena, consider taking some good self defense classes once you get your handgun. I also recommend you check out the many free YouTube videos made by Massad Ayoob, a world-class instructor in handgun use and self defense, who has recorded training sessions in Judicious Use of Force, Shoot to Live, Home Invasion, Preparation for Home Defense, and What to Do After a Shooting. Just Google his name and these topics and the YouTubes should show up. Very good instructional information from an expert, and free.
Here is a very good technical review of self defense ammo, for when you are ready to consider this:

This is an informative review by a doctor of different gunshot wounds effects; we all need to be aware of this real-life information:
