Newbie? / Lurker and the current Gun-ban Issue!

Hello folks! Not really a newbie here, but been a lurker for a long time time now. Good, healthy and enjoyable discussions I have read here so far. I live in the Socialist State of NJ, next to the Communist State of NY. I hope to someday move to the free-er State of PA.

With the heated issue about gun-ban, I can't help it but put out this sentiment. Here is the letter I sent to my Senators and House Representative:

    ================================================== ========================================

    Dear ...,

I am writing you this letter because of my concerns about our lawmakers who are about to infringe on the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

Here is my view of reality:

While many will consider these recent events as prevalent, they are "isolated" incidents. We all know that we live in a "small world" and in the day and age of technology, where any news from any corner of the world will reach anyone in an instant. If a shooting incident happens in Afghanistan, we will find out about it right away. Please recall how the news reach our households in the 60's, for example. In contrast to today, a single "Tweet" can potentially reach thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions, about any event, anywhere in the world. These events are made far worse by the sensationalism-journalism we see in the media today. If any news will bring more audience to the Media (hence more $$$), they will not let up on what they say and do. Media is not after the truth, they are after their bottom-line.

Regarding the "proliferation" of guns in America. True. True, because America is, has-been and will always be a gun society. We use these tools for security, hunting and sporting purposes. The reality is, we know how much guns there are in the hands of law-abiding citizens, but we do not know how much there are in the hands of the "bad guys." Another reality is, even if you dry up the supply, there will always be guns around, enough to last this Congress' lifetime. If you dry up the supply, underground sources will still supply the bad guys, but the "good guys" will no longer have the means to arm themselves for protection purposes.

Regarding limiting the number of rounds in a magazine, seven for example in the State of New York. Picture this: the good guys - the civilian bodyguards of prominent politicians in New York, if they comply with the law, their tool of protecting their clients will have limited capacity. If God forbid, they get into an incident where they have to protect their client and use those tools, they will have to reload after the 7th round, while the bad guys will still have the means to continuously inflict harm upon them. Also, how many 10 round magazines did the perpetrator of the Virginia Tech shooting had at the time of that incident? The limitation on the number of rounds in a magazine was not and will not be a deterrent to anyone who think of harming another human being. You will penalize the law-abiding citizens specially the good guys providing us security and protection.

Regarding "assault" or "military-type" rifles: we all know these are crafted words, created by those less-knowledgeable about the subject or the by ones who created these "images" for the public's perception. The ones that the military and the police use have "full" features of what real assault rifles are. The ones being sold to the citizenry, are "scaled-down" versions. They only look cosmetically similar, but they function differently. Please do not legislate based on looks but please research on the facts regarding what true assault and military rifles are and propagate that truth.

While there are limited sources of information about the gun industry in America, if Congress pass a gun-ban law, you do know that America will have to deal with more unemployment. The gun industry in America for security, protection and sporting purposes, I believe is one of the healthiest sector of our economy. They provide living means to millions of Americans as well as provide technological innovation in this field. If a gun-ban law is passed, it will stymy the development of that sector, in terms of earnings, research and development. If a law is passed, the Chinese and other parts of the world can potentially have far more "superior" guns in the future than what we can provide to the ones who provide us security and freedom.

Here is another reality that I know you are very much aware of; and please pass on to the other members of in the Congress and the Senate: for those voting for a gun-ban law, they know they will not get the votes of millions of pro-2nd amendment citizens come next elections.

I am not against change. I do agree with President Obama that the recent incidents call for one; but look at the two sides of the issues. The gun-ban advocates are crafting their laws based primarily on sentiments and not facts.

Here are the changes that I believe will make sense:

Implement the current laws to its fullest extent. Educate the public that any gun-related violence will be met by harsh punishments. The laws surrounding gun violence should be looked at and changed such that it will become a real deterrent to anyone thinking about using guns to harm another human being. Punishment should be harsh and not slap on the wrists for any gun-related violence. Make any gun-related violence punishable by maximum imprisonment without parole, up to life sentences.

Let us protect our schools. Let the law-abiding, able-bodied and able-minded individuals, ex-police or ex-military carry guns around schools so they can react if need be. If we have the Marshall program for our airlines, why can't we have one to protect our most valuable loved ones. Let us do away with the gun-free zone around schools. In communities where there are "crime-watch" programs, similarly, let us create programs where there will be "anti-violence-watch" around schools. Arm parents and students a reporting mechanism where they can report anonymously to authorities anyone who are deemed dangerous or are plotting to inflict harm. Even to this day, when schools around America have looked at the best means to protect the schools after the Newtown incident, isn't it true that any ill-thinking individual can STILL bring any weapon inside schools? Let us create meaningful programs that will truly mitigate that. Gun-ban and magazine limitation laws will not.

Expand the research and possible (law enforcement-only) identification of individuals with mental deficiencies. Provide a law and means such that these individuals will not be able to purchase any tools that can inflict harm or be near around one.

There are probably many unwanted guns lying around in millions of households across America. Just like what we do with extra or unwanted clothes, we have those donation bins. Let us have similar ones across America specifically for guns. If anyone wants to get rid of guns anonymously, they can do so with this program. (Needless to say that these bins will be watched and protected.) We can also have a year-round program with our Police stations accepting donations of unwanted guns. Anyone should be able to do so without any repercussions or background checks. Let us make this a very active program so we dry up the availability of unwanted guns.

Make gun-buyback a permanent federal or state funded, year-round programs across America, specially in communities like [put your own choice], etc.. (Have Mr. Bloomberg allocate and partially or fully fund this program from his anti-gun initiatives. ) This will likewise limit the number of unwanted guns getting into the wrong hands.

These programs outlined above will truly be a big challenge to implement. However, they represent real changes that will be met by real results in the years to come. The bun-ban laws that are being crafted now, specially the one from Sen. Feinstein are a mere "knee-jerk" reactions - just so to say, something was done. It is not a true solution to the problem. It will simply penalize law-abiding citizens, and will not deter the "bad guys" or any mentally-ill individuals in inflicting harm.

I trust that you will create, if not vote for real meaningful laws or programs and I trust you will vote NO to Senator Feinstein's and other similar "gun-ban" laws. Finally, I also trust that true to your oath as a public servant, that you will uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States.
