Hello all gun enthusiasts...new blogger here.....by the way im skooter

Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself my name is SKOOTER i am a former active duty marine. I went to boot camp 1985, was one of the first few platoons to get the new M16A2. The only optics we had was the old....even for that time....the old ANPVS STARLIGHT NIGHT SCOPES. Trained on them for a few days then went back to what you now call now B.U.I.S. (back up iron sights). Their was no back up iron sights for us. All we had was the 1-300 yard aperature then the 3-600yard. All marines got extremely proficient on using iron sights. Now when I look at the marines now they all have optics and havent seen one photo of them using B.U.I.S. WHY NOT!!!!!!! My personal opinion is were going to be attacked with an electronic det8nation sometime in the future. It may not be in my life time, but some time.
I COULD HIT A GNATS BALLS AT 600 YARDS, MY PRE-QUAL. I SHOT ALMOST PERFECT. Qualification day in San Diego. IF BAD WEATHER HIT THAT QUAL. DAY IT DID IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. Rainy, windy and just crap. Didnt shoot as perfect but still did ok.
MY LONG WINDED QUESTION IS THIS? WHY ARE THEY NOT QUALIFYING ON IRON SIGHTS? WHEN THE CRAP HITS THE FAN AND ALL ELECTRONICS ARE DEEMED USELESS I DARE TO THINK HOW MANY MARINES WILL BE SO DEPENDENT ON ELECTRONICS THAT THEY COULD LOSE THEIR B.U.I.S. SKILLS.
Since shooting is a deteriorating skill, i hope it never comes to that (MARINES LOSING THEIR B.U.I.S. SKILLS). I hope their is someone out there whos new to the marines within the last decade who can enlighten me on the policy of the marine corps and when you go to edson range and qualify whT do you qual on? Iron sights and optics or just b.u.I.s..
SORRY FOR THE LONG WINDED MESSAGE.
JUST GOT THE NATO ISSUE M4A1 5.56 AND AT THIS TIME DONT HAVE PLANS ON USING OPTICS UNTIL I RE-GAIN MY SKILLS SHOOTING IRON SIGHTS AT ALL DISTANCES. Then maybe after a couple years get optics for back up.

Welcome from Wisconsin, Skooter! That's a good question. When I was an Army Instructor I always had kids asking me why we have to learn to use a compass, iron sights - fill in the blanks - when we had all of this technology to rely on. My stock reply that if your batteries failed, your electronics went bad, we had an EMP or you just plain busted the contraption what would you do?

    Thanks for your service.

    Welcome from NH.

While I know electronic optics have their purpose, I do not own any nor do I plan to. I would take a 1X long eye relief scope with a traditional recticle over a fancy red dot any day, and I always want access to my B.U.I.S without removing my optics.
