    North Dakota checking in

Howdy, from the world's second largest nuclear arsenal. After cruising Glock Talk and KTOG for several months, I've finally registered at a Website. Not an easy hurdle for some reason. I'm an old MP sentry dog handler (Dec. 69-Nov. 71) who's never pulled my trigger in anger at anything or anyone. I've hunted pheasants, ducks, and (beginning at the ripe old age of 38) whitetail deer, with a .44 mag S&W 629, 4"bbl, open sights. Killed a lot of deer with that gun, but have since been through a number of handguns for hunting and currently pack a Glock Model 20 full size 10mm for deer and in the car. I've had a CCW permit for about 20 years and have vacillated between a 9mm and a .40 cal for concealed carry. As of last winter I made the wholesale switch to 9mm and have loaded up with Gold Dot Hollow Point 115 +P+ ammo for my G19, G17 and my wife's G19.
My dilemma: This young alleged thief in the news who has a 9mm bullet buried in his skull and my recent review of the FBI agent (Patrick?) advising that the larger bullet and larger hole, with substantial penetration, is the best caliber for self defense.
Should I sell my G17 and G19 and get another G23 with a pile of Double Tap 165 gr GDHP or should I keep the 9mms and just shoot a whole lot more in IDPA and IPSC competitions in the region?
Any thoughtful advice would be appreciated.
(By the way, for the third year in a row I didn't get a decent shot at a whitetail. Makes me feel sort of bad about selling my latest S&W 629 Mountain Gun with the Performance Center trigger job, red front ramp, and white outline rear sight. I like the double duty of the 10mm, but really wanted to test the 180 gr GDHPs and 200 gr XTPs from Double Tap.)

Welcome from Middle Tennessee, and thank you for your military service!

I personally prefer the .40 S&W to the 9mm, but that is not based on any personal experience with an actual shooting (thank goodness!). If you are comfortable with the 9mms, I think that is probably more important than any theoretical advantage of the .40 over the 9mm. (I carry both on occasion, but carry a .45 ACP most of all.)

    Good luck, and good shooting!

    Greetings from Northern Michigan

Can't speak to your caliber question a whole lot. I read a little about that kid with the bullet in his head, but it didn't give many details. I would imagine that the round struck him off a ricochet, or after passing through something else, becase it sounds like the slug is lodged just under his skin, above is eye brow. From everything I've seen, as far as what actual balistic shooting test show that just about any round should have gone right through that kid's head if it were a direct shot.

Check out the box of truth web sight, and you'll see where 9mm consistantly penetrates further than .45's... that's not to say that the .45 doesn't deliver much more energy into it's target, but just as far as penetration goes. Talk knock down power, and the .45 win's every time.

but until more details come out about the actual shooting, bullet path, (squib load?), ricochet, etc.... I wouldn't base any decision on just one case, especially with so few facts.
When the messenger arrives and says 'Don't shoot the messenger,' it's a good idea to be prepared to shoot the messenger, just in case.
