Welcome from Missouri. Try an XD in 9 or 45. Or how about a used Glock 19. For a little more you can get it new.

this would be my recomendation. i prefer a .40 to a 9mm. if you still wanted a 9mm then go for the Glock 19. i would suggest though, going to a show/shop and checking out their guns. don't buy from them... just check them out or rent a couple different ones from a range. you really should get a feel for the gun. i ended up with a HK USP Compact .40 for my carry gun. bit pricier then what you're looking for, but you could most likely find one used for the same price as a new glock.
I'm a diehard 1911 fan but I love my Glock 19. It's relatively lightweight, almost no recoil, spare parts and leather gear are easy to find - and they're pretty close to the price you're looking for. You might have to shop around a bit to find a NIB for $500 or less (it can be done though) but lightly used guns are well in your price range.
Other ideas: A Certified Pre-owned (CPO) Sig like a 239, 229, 226, etc might fit you well, they're fine guns. Kahr Arms offers several variants that you might like. There's tons of other options out there as well.

Welcome!
Depends on the caliber - I bought my G19 new for under $500. If you like .40 then the G23 would be similar.
Looking around for some used guns can get you a "nicer" gun (Sig, HK, as examples), but you need to really be able to evaluate them.
Edited to add: If you like your current handgun and think you can reasonably conceal it, why not just invest the $500 bucks in training and ammo?

Welcome aboard Lurch!
If it were me, I'd save my loot and wait till I had over $500.00 and then look at the Glock 30SF. (I think they're gonna be under $650.00.)![]()

There's also the option of layaway, it's how I've bought most of my guns. It takes longer to get them home but I'm able to afford much nicer guns than I'd be able to get if buying them outright.
