    Arthritis can vary greatly, and we've no idea of the severity of yours. If you have to, you could even go as far as carrying a 22LR, such as the Walther P-99. But I doubt you'll have to.

    In general, you want to carry the largest, hardest hitting caliber you can practice regularly with. For many of us, that will be the .45 ACP.

    Good advice above on the instructor and trying several handguns. That will be money well spent.

    Is it the shooting/recoil etc. that is most likely to be a problem for you, or is it manipulating the action of the weapon (springs and such)? You may end up being better off with a revolver than a semi-auto. Again, depends on the severity of you condition.

    Trying several = knowing what will work for you. Best of luck!
