Hi and welcome from Fort Worth TX!
Start here: Cornered Cat. Cornered Cat is a web site run by and for the lady handgunner. The Walther PPK is a nice gun, but may not be the best choice for you. Cornered Cat has information on how to be sure the gun fits your hand properly and tips on how to "rack the slide."
Spend a couple hours reading everything over there. It's a complete course for the lady handgunner!

I was on Duval street last month.
Where do you go shooting there?
As for the PPK when you rack the slide don't baby it.
Pull hard and it will come back and just release

You should be able to rack the slide when someone shows you. If for some reason you can't, a revolver may be an option for you.

Of course, if you carry one in the chamber with the hammer down and the safety/hammer block engaged on the PPK, this won't be a tactical issue until you need to reload (which one hopes is not necessary). I never use the safety purely as a decocker, although it will work that way--eventually the peening of the hammer on the hammer block may break the block, then BANG! I use the thumb on my off hand to hold the hammer, then depress the safety and control the lowering of the hammer. If nothing else, it saves wear and tear on the firearm.
I apologize if I am "preaching to the choir," and welcome again!

Welcome from South Carolina. I echo what others have said. Go to www.CorneredCat.com. You will find a "wealth" of information to assist you in all aspects of firearms. Good Luck and again WELCOME!
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.
That works until you possibly need to clear a firearm malfunction.
One could possibly make the argument (I guess) that when the heart rate is up & adrenaline is pumping and a person is actually in a dire self-defensive situation they will somehow "find the strength" to operate the slide and clear a malf.
