Do a search for XD Problems, and whatever other one your thinking about - ask your local dealer(s) what they see come back for warranty or rework to help in your decision.
You'll get plenty of recommendations here as this is a great, helpful bunch of folks and very diverse in what they (we) own and like.
My nightstand (and duty weapon) is S&W's full size .40 caliber M&P - which of course I recommend.

I am partial to Glocks, however I know some people hate the grip angle.
My best gun might be the worse for you, so before you shed a few hundreds, go to a range that rents what you are considering, talk to guys there, and try the guns (more than 2-3 rounds).
Finding and buying the pistol is only a small part; now you have to train, not only for proficiency with your sidearm, but also to develop the proper mindset.
If you cannot go to one of the training course, get a little book called"Principles of Self-Defense" by Col. Jeff Cooper. You will not regret it.
