    New from Indiana

    Hello from Indiana,
I have had my CCW license (lifetime license) for several years, but have never really utilized it to speak of due to not having a satisfactory carry gun and frankly, not really giving it much thought until now. I currently own a Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag and a Marlin 1894 lever gun in 44 mag. The Blackhawk is a lot of fun and great for home protection, but not really a very suitable carry gun. It's big, heavy and looks great in my western style hoslter, but would probably draw a lot of stares if I wore it in public. I am looking into what would be the ideal carry gun to purchase and am looking for any help or suggestions on what to look for. A recent incident with one of my daughters boyfriends got me thinking a lot about the need to carry. Their relationship ended and he got a little scary for a while. It made me realize that things happen sometimes totally out of your control and in spite of your best efforts not to get into bad situations. I would definitely need something completely inconspicuous and safe because of my work. If they suspected I was carrying that would definitely cause issues, but to be honest I would rather deal with issues than have to deal with the alternative if I ever found myself in a life threatening situation.

Welcome to the forum from an ex-hoosier in VA.

As to a carry gun, you did not say whether you prefer to stay with a revolver or want a semi-auto. If you want to stick with a revolver I'd recommend you look at the Ruger SP-101 in .357 caliber. If you want to go with a semi-auto, there are many that will suit your needs. Find a shooting range that rents guns and try out a bunch of them. I'd recommend at least 9mm for a defensive weapon. Try different calibers and see what is the largest you can shoot well. May be a 9mm, maybe .40 cal or it could be a .45. Remember 9mm will be cheapest to shoot in the long run, due to price of ammo. In 9mm I would suggest you look at the CZ75 P-01, or in .40 cal the CZ75 P-06. Both are well built, have good ergonomic design and are reasonably priced. The most important thing in comfortable carry is going to be your holster/belt combo, don't scrimp on them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am thinking that I would probably be leaning toward a semi auto just because it's flatter and easier to carry. I am also wondering about staying with SA because that is what I'm used to trigger wise. I will look at the CZ75's.
Good suggestion about the holster. Do you have any favorites. One thing I was looking at that looked interesting was smart carry. I was wondering if you have any experience with them.

The CZ's are DA/SA decocker models. Don't really recommend a single action for defensive weapon, unless it is a 1911 which is designed to be carried cocked and locked. As to Smart Carry rig, I don't have any experience with it, but there are many on here who use it and like it very much.
