I was googling Mel Tappan when I came across this website. I'm from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, where firearms are a little bit (not much) more accepted in discussions that in other states of Australia.
I found a copy of Mel Tappan's book Survival Guns in a secondhand store and snapped it up as gun books are not readily available here unless you buy from a gun book dealer or firearms dealer. There is a bit of a phobia to firearms and if you own one you are either a redneck or psycho.
What interests me in the book is the personal defence side of things. I'm a hunter so I understand the hunting for meat side of things. But personal defence is not a legimitate reason to own a gun in Oz. On the contrary you shoot someone on your property and you are most likely to go to jail. There are laws that apply to using equal force.
A question I have is that handgun laws are very strict, we can't have any semi autos (rifles or shotties) or pump action shotties (pump action rifles, yes, weird laws) so how do you adapt what Mel is saying in his book to our situation. I thought maybe a 16 in barrel lever action in 44 magnum could fill some of the void but anything else I'm not too sure.

Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

Welcome from New Zealand, I really feel for you guys accross the ditch, your rules are even stricter than ours. In saying that though, have you investigated getting your Pistol licence ? we have competitions over here in NZ and Australian shooters participate so it must be possible to obtain handguns there.
Cant help out on the self defence side, same boat here, even though I cant use my handguns for daily self defence its comfoting to know if the world turns to crap (ie civil war, major disaster, riots, zombie war etc) thats its there to help should somehting out of the ordinary arise.
Otherwise get yourself a good ASP Baton for outside your home and a joiner \ cabinet maker once told me that a hand saw is a very effective self defence weapon to keep under your bed. Apprently its very hard to take a hand saw of someone and it hurts like a bugger when it rips your skins.
