    Gday from Australia

Hello to all from a country that never gave its people the right to bear arms, and as such, was unceremoniously stripped of them.

I work early mornings on a train station to put myself through university. I'm employed by a company that is given massive government subsidies. I'm a qualified security officer and crowd controller and my job is basically to provide a security presence at train stations during morning peak while the network goes to hell. I'm a security officer in every sense but name, and as such, am not allowed to carry ANY kind of conventional weapon or risk jail time and termination.

Even if my job role was as a security officer, it would be a whole new ball game being trained and accredited to carry at all (there are a grand total of maybe 6 training organizations left in my state accredited to deliver armed guard training, and maybe two of them EVER run classes)

So, in between dealing with drunks, violent graffiti gangs, people throwing rocks or shooting at the trains, and the occasional murder, I rely on my mouth to get me out of most situations. One day however, that won't be enough. That's why I want to learn here.

EDIT: I should however mention that compared to my last job (night shift liquor store clerk, and the fun of potential armed robbery, shoplifters, drunks and underage kids, instant termination if you initiated any kind of defensive physical contact, a manager who discouraged us from hitting the hold up alarm and again, totally unarmed) this one's a walk in the park.

Just hunting around the net basically. Looked at Don Rearic's site and a few others and this one kept popping up on my search engine and is basically exactly what I'm after.

Just reading through your site, you guys think some of your states have harsh legislation regarding what you can carry? You have NOTHING to complain about.

Let me put it this way. Kubotans are considered a prohibited import at a federal level, totally banned in 6 of 8 states (you can apply to the chief commissioner of police in the rest to own one, if you're prepared to pay $300 or so, keep it in a gun safe and NOT CARRY IT!!), and the carrying of even an umbrella with the intention of using it to defend yourself can see you in jail for six months with a massive fine.

We have such a patchwork of laws (still) that can vary between nirvana (Vermont and Alaska) to outright stupid (New Jersey, Chicago, Hawaii, Washington, D.C. and others) of which you defend yourselves in the latter jurisidictions you just might get charged criminally and sued civilly. But all of that sure can't be worse than in your country for which I'm sorry!

You're right...we do take a lot of our freedoms for granted here...it takes a conversation with someone who doesn't enjoy those same rights to put it into perspective!

Your country is really forcing you to become "creative" in developing self-defense methods. Martial arts and hand-to-hand combat techniques aren't illegal there yet, are they?

Well, an incident at a nightclub last year should put it into perspective (punch 'David Hookes' into a search engine). A well known sporting personality gets drunk, becomes physical with security, is escorted of premises.

He attempts to assault a guard, guard strikes him, he falls and hits his head on the ground and dies a couple of days later. It was a tragedy, no question, but it highlighted the state of play with regard to use of force; The guard is charged with manslaughter and exiled from the industry forever (he was subsequently acquitted, but the civil trial is yet to come).

Disko - welcome to an Antipodian new member

I hate what has happened down there - and I can sympathize more than most - having left the miserable UK in 2000 to marry a fine lady and make a better life here. I lost - no I had stolen let's say - my entire 24 handgun collection in '97. (I kept and brought with me a mere four longarms.)

Sure I got some money for them but that was immaterial in some ways.

I am appalled - sickened even by the draconian laws and the way they affect - effectively rendering impotent, the average good guy's options for self defence.

Anyways - just hope you'll hang around a bit and maybe find some useful info that might help.

Ever since I was young, I told people I'd move to the U.S. and join the police. There's every possibility, with the way the rights in Australian's everyday lives, working lives and personal lives are being eroded, I may one day make that move.

    Thumbs up

Welcome to our forum. It's your forum now also.

Great to have you here on CombatCarry.com all the way from Australia.
You've traveled a long "virtual way" to get here.

It would be nice if you came to the U.S. for real & as a huge plus...the American girls love that Aussie accent.

You would likely be great Police Officer material.

It's hard for me to imagine you having a job in Australia where your job is basically to serve and protect & and the same time...not being trusted with the necessary tools to do that job or to protect yourself and your own life. That sure stinks big time.

What about OC Pepper Spray...is that permitted?
    How about a Stun Gun?

Please join in and participate on the forum.
The Down Under view of things in general will be an appreciated plus and a nice addition to the forum.
