Scary, But Positive Outcome: Police kill man who stormed wife's house with shotgun

Police kill man who stormed wife's house with shotgun - The Daily Freeman News: Serving the Hudson Valley since 1871(DailyFreeman.com)

MILAN (NY) — A man who blasted his way into his estranged wife’s home with a shotgun was killed by police when he refused to surrender, the state police said on Saturday.

Police said Richard Kane Jr., 47, of 21 Summerside Drive, Elizaville, went to the woman's house at 4 Hidden Hollow Trail in the Northern Dutchess town of Milan about 8:30 p.m. Friday, fired two rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun into the front door and went inside. When police arrived a short time later, they heard the woman screaming and found her being held against her will by the man in an upstairs bedroom.

Police said they were able to get the woman out of the house, but Kane resisted being taken into custody and was shot once in the abdomen by a trooper. Kane died a short time later at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.

The Dutchess County medical examiner performed an autopsy on Kane and determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the chest/abdomen area, according to Lt. Dominick Chiumento of state police Troop K.

Chiumento would not provide the name of the state police member who killed Kane, though he said the weapon used against the suspect was a standard-issue .45-caliber Glock handgun.

Chiumento declined to say whether Kane threatened police with the shotgun. He also was not certain if Kane was holding his estranged wife at gunpoint, though he said he presumed that to be the case.

The lieutenant said police know of no prior violence between Kane and his wife.

Any questions about the stopping power of .45?

No, but I will hazard the effort to say this: this particular instance of .45 caliber use does not indicate effectiveness (or lack there of) of its stopping power.

All we know is that a .45 was used, and that much later while in the hospital, the BG died. We do not know if he was coming at someone, was shot with the .45, and was "stopped instantly" or "not stopped instantly". We do not know if he fell, kept on coming, was actively threatening with a gun and did or did not continue threatening with a gun, etc.

On a separate note, good job by the Dutchess County police!

Basically, this case as presented provides exactly no clarification on .45 stopping power. It only verifies .45 killing power, which I don't think anyone questions.

Stopping power debates serve no purpose here...the dirtbag is taking a permanently pleasant dirtnap, taxpayers are free of room and board, and the LEO is unharmed...all ended well!

Congrats to the State Police also. It's a shame it went that far, but he took it that far and justice was served.

Good work on the police, and it is certainly a large lot of fortune that she was able to call and that the police were able to respond in time. My guess is that had the husband "finished the job" just to start with rather than trying to hold her, we'd be reading about a murder.
