EL PASO — A 14-year-old Hudspeth County boy has been killed in an exchange of gunfire with police just hours after his parents reported him missing, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Monday.

The boy, who has not been identified, was spotted Sunday night by deputies from the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office along with Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens at a deer camp on the sprawling Gunsight Ranch in rural Hudspeth County, said department spokeswoman Tela Mange. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Texas Rangers unit is investigating the shooting.

Mange said the boy fired several shots at officers before fleeing to a second deer camp. When officers followed the boy, he continued shooting at them before running to a third location where he started shooting again from the top of a barn, Mange said.

The officers fired back at the boy, hitting and killing him, Mange said.

His parents had reported him missing earlier Sunday.

Mange said it was unclear Monday how many shots were fired by the boy and the officers.

No other details were released Monday.

Officials at the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing investigation.

Act like a man, get treated like a man. The age is irrelevant when you have a firearm and intend on shooting someone. Sounds like the cops tried to not shoot him. Anyone else think they could run and fire that much without taking some rounds?

    Sometimes police have no choice.

14 year old can line up sights and pull trigger as well as any one else.

It is a horrible situation and my heart breaks for the LEO's who have to live with having to make a decision that ended such a young life. But when somebody is shooting at you, repeatedly, age (nor gender nor race nor religion nor height nor weight etc, etc, etc...) is no longer a factor. Very, very sad.

This kid was possibly suicidal and allowed the police to carry out the deed because he could not bring himself to do it.

Perhaps he was mentaly ill, or high on any number of drugs or amount of alcohol. Still, nobody can understand why someone so young would do such a thing.

West Texas boy killed after shootout with police

EL PASO — A 14-year-old Hudspeth County boy has been killed in an exchange of gunfire with police ...

Mange said the boy fired several shots at officers ...

That's not a "boy" when the perp decides to play adult games. That's every bit an adult criminal, so long as he's attempting to take the lives of innocents. If as reported, then he earned the result.

Condolences to the family involved. May they find some answers, by looking inward.

My heart goes out to the law enforcement folks who have to deal with this person's utter lack of concern for others. Like any other adult perpetrator of such a crime, he has destroyed lives, here. May the LEO's find their way through it all.

Bad situation for sure, but if a 14 year old wants to run with the 'big dogs', then he should prepare for 'big dog rules'.

The poor young man was waiting for the LEO's to start counting! If you don't stop shooting by the time I reach ten!

It's a shame, but the world does not operate by those rules, especially when weapons are involved.

I will pray for both the LEO's, the young man, and his family, no winners on this one.

As a general rule, if one shoots at police, they will return fire with indiscriminate regularity (as they should).

There are two things going on here that should never be confused or blended together:

    1. He's a kid. No matter how heinous his act, he's still a kid.
    2. Sometimes the perp really gives you no choice but to use lethal measures, kid or not.

This is sad; sad because a kid can, in fact, create a situation that necessitates his own death. I try to avoid the search for a "silver lining" in an event like this because it's a coping mechanism that can wander into cheers for killing a kid. It's just sad and terrible all the way around and that's all there is to it.
