    Good-Man escapes abduction attempt

HARLINGEN — A man fought off two armed captors Sunday evening in an altercation that involved gunfire and a chase down Commerce Street, according to court records.

The victim was outside his brother’s house in the 100 block of East Taylor Avenue when a man stepped out of a black Dodge Charger and pointed a gun at him, according to court records.

The armed man, identified in court records as Bobby Leal, 36, of Harlingen, told the unidentified victim to empty his pockets, which included two cell phones.

Then, Leal told the victim to get into the back of a Chevrolet Tahoe owned by the victim’s brother, according to court records. The Tahoe had been parked outside the home where the victim was abducted.

A light-skinned Hispanic male with short hair sat in the passenger seat, pointing a 9mm handgun at the victim, according to court records. A man wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt drove the SUV away.

Leal and another man drove away in the Dodge Charger, court records stated.

At the 1500 block of North Commerce, the victim decided to fight back, knocking the gun away from the man in the passenger seat, according to court records. When the gun went off, the driver got out of the car and ran away.

Court records stated that the captor pulled the trigger several times, but the gun had jammed.

The captor eventually fled the Tahoe, a police department news release stated.

With two of his captors gone, the victim moved to the driver’s seat and drove off, according to court records.

But the Dodge Charger being driven by Leal, was still following the Tahoe, court records stated.

After the victim was able to lose the Charger in traffic, he flagged down a police officer, court records stated. While talking with the officer around 10 p.m., the victim was able to point out the Charger as it drove by.

Police stopped the Charger at the intersection of Fairpark Boulevard and North Commerce, according to court records. The driver, Leal, was identified as the man who first pointed a gun at him.

Police charged Leal with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony. He was arraigned Sunday and bond was set at $75,000, police said.

A news statement released by Harlingen Police stated that investigators were investigating the identities of the other suspects.

The jail list from Monday listed Alfredo Aguilar as charged with kidnapping. It also stated Aguilar was at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Why was this man granted bond at all?!

The Chargers value will nearly cover the bond and by that this fool could be in the wind...Or even attempt retribution against the victim (!).

Either the bond should have been set impossibly high ($1M) or if allowed outright denied altogether.

This was no regular mugging or auto theft.
It was a planned and coordinated take down with very serious intent and a high degree of disregard for the law and humanity (that of the victim).

I agree with Janq.......Why bail at all???

We all know what leaving the scene of the crime with the BG's is for.

I wonder what the back story is on this adventure? I don't believe it was random. There has to be a connection between the victim and the abductors.

And +1 on Janq's post. Aggravated kidnapping should have been a No Bond crime.
