Never take a bat to a gun fight...they got lucky. The robber really didn't want to shoot anyone or they would both be dead.

What's with the goofy angle on all those shots? Did Tarantino set up the security cameras?

    Yep, very lucky.
If the clerk would have been armed, it would/could have been lights out for the dirtbag.
At least they do have a good face shot.

The clerk certainly did his best to split that melon wide open. I hope he was successful.

cant see the video from work, but by the sounds of it, its the one i saw on tv on some 'worlds dumbest criminals' kind of show.
The guy had already robbed the same store a day or two before and came back to rob it again. Both times with no weapons.
If I were the store clerk I certainly would have had more than a baseball bat!

Looks like the thug did try to take a couple of shots. IMO goes to prove a determined defense is ALWAYS better than putting my life in the hands of a depraved thug. Which of course is why I carry a gun, the clerk would have been better off with a gun. That said good for him for standing up and doing what he needed to do with what he had. An aside my brother lost a job in CA because he beat a robber armed with a knife with a sawed off bat. Made sure he crippled him. The store did not let him bring his gun to work, which is why he brought the bat.

Store owner beats armed robber with a baseball bat.

Waterbury police are still looking for the suspect who tried to rob a store last Friday but instead was beaten with a baseball bat by the store's owner.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, a robber entered United Liquors, and demanded money.

He flashed a chrome pistol and fired a shot into the wall to show the cashier he was serious.

But Mr. Keshwala, the store owner and cashier, wasn't going to be More..intimidated.

He grabbed a baseball bat from behind the counter as a neighbor, Richard Riley, came inside to help.

The store owner began slugging the robber and they pushed him into a corner of the store.

During the struggle, the thief fired a second shot into the back wall.

He managed to wrest free and escaped with some cash he swiped from the cash register.

Police have checked local hospitals for the man, who was likely bleeding from the head as a result of the beating.

    Those guys are very lucky!!!

Lucky because as noted the threat only wanted to posture AND when he did fire the first time it was accidental (wall shot) while the second shot was more purposeful but clearly without aim and again he missed (wall shot).

At the same time the store owner working the bat he too in body position and manner acted with hesitancy and posturing, at least initially.
I did not see hm connect once with the BGs head and in fact I saw most of his swings miss wildly...With two being from feet away as the BG struggled with the first guy.

Everybody in that video including the BG were very lucky that basically nobody among the three had it in them to do harm to another human.
If only one of them, any one of them had possessed ability to do so, then this video would have been very different and at least one person would have been requiring immediate medical attention.

There is a chapter in Grossman's book 'On Killing' that talks about this very real phenomenon.

    - Janq

P.S. - Rather than depend on pain compliance by way of a baseball/softball bat, the clerk would have been better off with an edged weapon.
A machete...Or if that is unlawful to possess in the locality then an improvised blade weapons such as say a lawnmower blade with large leather glove kept near by. Slip on glove, pickup lawn mower blade and go to work. During the aftermath why was the lawnmower blade there? It was in a bag with the gloves due to be taken to the shop for sharpening. End of not at all unbelievable or odd story.
A person can in the immediate shrug off a bat beating and hitting a person in the head is a bit difficult to do when inside a small space exactly as shown here in this video. A bit different than being outside on an open field.
Another very viable option would have been for the clerk to have deployed OC/CS spray with specifically a stream type (not fogger/mist) nozzle. That would have allowed him the standoff distance he naturally desired for comfort & safety while also being functional. Much more so than with a bat.

very lucky for the store owner and the neighbor but very stupid. the robber was intent on leaving. why detain him and have him use his weapon when you have none of the proper tools to negate his pistol.

the store owner needs to go to the batting cages though; he did not get any solid hits.

Can't agree with that. What that store owner needs is a big handgun and a sharp sense of awareness.
