Police Probe How Bullet Fragment Hit Volunteer Medic In Hand

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- The Wheat Ridge Police Department is investigating how a volunteer was struck by a deflected bullet fragment during routine SWAT firing-range training.
A SWAT officer was shooting a sniper rifle on one firing range April 14 when a bullet fragment apparently deflected off metal and hit the hand of the volunteer, who was on another firing range, police Division Commander Jim Lorentz told TheDenverChannel.com Thursday.
The volunteer, a paramedic who has served as a SWAT team medic for 20 years, was treated at a local hospital and released, Lorentz said. Neither the officer or volunteer were identified. The officer remains on regular duty during the investigation.

Officials want to learn how the bullet fragment was deflected during the routine firearm qualification testing at the Rooney Valley Law Enforcement Training Facility in Golden, Lorentz said. The facility has three separate firing ranges that are shielded by earthen banks to prevent such ricochet accidents, he said.
"That's what under investigation: How did these fragments get to another range," Lorentz said. Investigators want to determine if the shooting range has a design flaw that poses a safety hazard or if there was "operator error," he added.
The officer was firing on the rifle shooting range and the volunteer was hit while cleaning up spent cartridges on the tactical range, Lorentz said.

Hm, interesting. I've certainly been hit by "splashback" from steel targets on my OWN range, but only when up close and personal. I've also seen a grenade fragment find its way through the walls of a tire house, but never heard of someone on one range hit by a ricochet from another range... It would be interesting to hear the results of the investigation...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
