ND: CHL holder shoots hole in ceiling, calls 911 to fib

With the other examples of liars, cheaters and thieves in the news being posted, here is one about a citizen with a concealed carry license that decided to handle his negligent discharge in a novel fashion.

A lesson in what not to do, from the Portland area of Oregon ...

    Dumb Crook

Deputies responded to a home invasion burglary. Hearing a noise, the homeowner peeked into a spare bedroom and saw someone handing items through a window to another person. He yelled at them the suspect with the gun was startled and shot a hole in the ceiling. Multiple units responded to investigate, but there were no leads.

Two days later detectives returned. They arrested the homeowner for Improper Use of 911 and Initiating a False Report. It seems his story changed. There was no burglar. He just forgot he left one round in his gun and when he went to clean it, he shot the hole in his own ceiling. He was afraid of losing his concealed handgun license so he came up with a burglary story. Ironically, if had he done nothing and said nothing, his accidental discharge might never have been noticed.

Ironically, now that he's on record as lying to police and falsifying evidence, he might well lose his coveted little CHL.

As a wise old friend used to say: liars figure, and figures lie.

And as we all know ... (1) Treat a gun as if it's always loaded.

Well, you see, this is what happened. I was minding my own business in my house and it must have been a helicopter that flew over and shot a hole in my roof!

If you know where the bullet stopped, that would be an appropriate course of action. If you don't know where it went, definitely call emergency services. Just imagine an injured party with an incapacitating but not immediately fatal wound who died because you were afraid of getting in trouble or embarrassed.

    What a fool.

Why is it that the usual story behind ND is "...I was cleaning my gun and..."

I say BS. "...I was playing with my loaded gun and..." is how it should be.

Who begins cleaning their pistol with pulling the trigger? The first thing I'm going to do is clean the bore, so remove the mag, lock the slide to begin the field strip process. I guess that other people may do it differently, but I really have a hard time believing that he was "cleaning his gun"

Yup. My Kahr CW9, PM9 and P380 pistols have all required pulling the trigger as part of stripping the gun for cleaning.

So that's the next step, after clearing/verifying the firearm.

True, but don't you pull the slide back first, like on the Glock? Thus exposing the chamber?

My XD, I have to pull the slide back first, swing the slide release lever, then pull the trigger and pull the slide off.
