Police are searching for a suspect who stabbed a firefighter who was responding to a call at a downtown Los Angeles hotel.
Officials say firefighter Charles MacDougall, a nine-year department veteran, is hospitalized in stable condition after Tuesday morning's attack.
Fire Department spokesman Richard Matheney says MacDougall and a colleague were treating someone who had fallen ill at the Cecil Hotel when somebody alerted them to a second person who needed help. When they went to check on the condition of that person, an assailant attacked MacDougall and stabbed him in the chest and back.
Police say the hotel, which serves low-income residents, has been plagued with drug dealing and other crimes.

It's a shame when someone trying to assist gets attacked. I hope they apprehend the individual responsible and put him away for a good long time.

My thoughts a prayers go out to the FF/Medic.
It does happen way too often. Most of the Medics that I have know have been attacked at some point while on the job. Luckily very few have been seriously injured.
I have been in more fights in the back of an ambulance than while I worked in prison.
Don't do things you don't want to explain to the Paramedics!
Stupidity should be painful.
Being a Law Enforcement Officer is dangerous work. Being a firefighter can be dangerous work. Being a Paramedic can ALSO be dangerous work. We had a paramedic shot while responding to a call a couple of years back. She recovered, but almost didn't.
I was a Paramedic/Firefighter for over 15 years, heavy on the Paramedic. I was injured several times. The worse one was being ridden down a flight of stairs by a crazy woman who was more than twice my weight. Permanently damaged by leg and I was forced into disability. My life has been dramatically diminished because of it.
My husband is a Paramedic and my daughter is a EMT and I stress to both (and anyone who does this type of work) that what they do is also a dangerous job. The pain sometimes lasts a life time and just because they are there only to help people doesn't mean they will be safe. BE AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU AND ACT DON'T JUST REACT. KEEP YOUR SAFETY IN YOUR HANDS.
A woman must not depend on protection by men. A woman must learn to protect herself.

A armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one has to back it up with his life.
One of my Instructors (jujutsu) is an EMT. she had to put a belligerent falling down drunk in a choke hold to get him to comply :/. You never know who you will be dealing with.
Sad days when those rushing to give assistance are attacked...
