Chicago police officer Thomas Wortham was killed in an exchange of gunfire with 4 individuals who approached him in a robbery attempt. Officer Wortham was an Iraq war vet having served two tours of duty. The incident occured outside the home of his father, a retired police sergeant and also a war vet. The older Wortham joined the gunfight killing one of the assailants and wounding another. The remaining assailants made off with the object of the attack, the victim's motorcyle. I can't help but think that while a lot of people feel safer owning guns, these two men with more experience and training than most people were not made any safer by having guns. In fact they may have been less safe. All of the attackers have been found and arrested.
