    Backpacker kills Grizzly in Denali

In Denali National Park, Alaska, a backpacker shot a Grizzly bear that charged his wife. The bear was shot 9 times with a .45 caliber semi-auto. The bear then turned away, it was found by park rangers about 100 feet from where the shooting had occured. This is the first such "known" shooting at Denali.
Got this story from Foxnews.com under the US news section.

Park officials are determining the justification for the shooting. It's legal to carry firearms in that area of the park but illegal to discharge them.
I would say a charging bear is perfect justification.

    Agreed!

Now, how about that griz taking NINE rounds of .45 and walking away? Those are some tough customers!

Now don't you know that if you voluntarily go there you are subject to being eaten as part of the ecosystem, and have NO justification is shooting the animal, who was only doing what comes naturally?

But seriously, this guy is going under the Federal microscope. A recent article quoted a park official saying that hikers think they are being charged when they are not. Apparently bears make a bluff charge first. I guess it's in the bear rule book. Still, if you wait to see if it's a bluff, and it isn't, you better because you are .

Yeah, a bear charging my wife is akin to a robber pointing a loaded gun at her. I'm not going to wait and see if it's a "bluff". I would find it hard for the investigation to find anything but SD. Only a fool would go grizzly hunting with an apparently unarmed wife and a .45.

There was a story of a man that was picked up by the jaws of a grizzly. He pulled his 44 mag and put 6 shots in to the bear at point blank range and the bear dropped him and walked away ( I don't remember how far) before expiring. The guy was going to upgrade to a S&W .50.

I sure wouldn't have recommend one but I love it that it was a .45!

I wonder what ammo he was using?

Usually when hit once with a .45 ACP a Grizzly Bear will fly at least a few feet backward
...and then just instantly drop over dead. <~~~

He must have been using really old ammo.

I'd have to ask for a jury trial and as part of my defense, I would have a bear released in the court room and see if the judge or the jury wanted a weapon!
