    Guns seized

MCALLEN, TEXAS (AP) -- Authorities have made the area's largest weapons seizure in a decade and feel confident that the 147 assault rifles seized in Laredo were headed to Mexico.

Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza says that officers acting on a tip from the Webb County Sheriff's Office stopped a vehicle Saturday afternoon containing the cache of brand-new, boxed assault rifles, 200 high-capactiy magazines, 53 bayonets and 10,000 rounds of ammunition.

One of the two men in the vehicle tried to flee, but was apprehended. Police have not yet identified the suspect.

Mexico has long complained that its violent drug war was fueled in large part by weapons smuggled across the border from the U.S.

I would bet money that at least one of them if not both are Mexican nationals that are Illegally here

This will continue to happen until we follow Arizona's lead.

This is also gonna add fuel to the justification of reinstating the assault weapons ban. President Calderon is gonna give Pres. Obama an "I told you so" on this one. Brace for shock and better buy all the hi-cap. mags and spare parts for our so called "assault weapons".

NO WAY obama tries gun control in an election year, then when the dems lose their butts in the house he wont have the votes to pull it off. His only hope will be an executive order and that will cause problems.

Let's hope you're right! I tend to think you are and that is pretty much my thoughts on it.

Still, I can't put anything past this administration. So it remains to be seen.

Largest weapons cache in years seized in Laredo
    By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN
    Associated Press Writer
McALLEN, Texas - Laredo police say they made one of their largest weapons
seizures in years after pulling over a truck laden with brand new assault
rifles, bayonets and ammunition that they believe was headed to Mexico.
The seizure Saturday afternoon came less then two weeks after Mexican
President Felipe Calderon asked Congress to help stem the flow of guns from
    the U.S. into Mexico.
Acting on a tip from the Webb County Sheriff's Office, Laredo police stopped a
vehicle containing 147 new, boxed assault rifles, 200 high-capacity magazines,
53 bayonets and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. One of the two men in the vehicle
tried to flee, but was apprehended, said Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza.
Baeza said when authorities laid out the cache in a conference room of the
federal building in Laredo Monday, it covered half the floor. He said it was
the largest weapons seizure in a decade in the area around Laredo, which is
145 miles south of San Antonio along the U.S. border with Mexico.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives are investigating the seizure, but Baeza said the
presumption is the vehicle was heading to Mexico.
"Two Joe Blows aren't going to buy a bunch of weapons and it stops there,"
Baeza said. "We're pretty positive it was headed to Mexico." He declined to
release the names of the two men in custody. Spokesmen for ICE and ATF would
only say that the investigation was ongoing. The U.S. Attorney's Office did
not immediately return a call for comment.
Baeza said the seizure hit home in the context of Calderon's recent visit to
Washington, during which he suggested the U.S. reinstate its ban on the sale
    of assault rifles.
Mexico has long complained that its violent drug war was fueled in large part
by weapons smuggled across the border from the U.S.
"I fully respect, I admire the American Constitution and I understand that the
purpose of the Second Amendment is to guarantee good American citizens the
ability to defend themselves and their nation," Calderon said to a joint
session of Congress during his May visit. "But believe me, many of these guns
are not going to honest American hands."
Calderon said that 75,000 guns had been seized in Mexico in three years and 80
percent of those that could be traced came from the U.S.
For about a year, the U.S. has intensified its efforts to inspect vehicles
heading into Mexico from the U.S. The hope is to find the weapons and drug
proceeds that help fuel Mexico's war with drug traffickers. The outbound
checkpoints however, are sporadic, hindered by a lack of manpower and
infrastructure that was not designed to delay traffic leaving the country.
More than 23,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since
    late 2006.

An assault rifle has either burst or full-auto -- by definition.

Any bets as to if they were assault rifles?

The weapons should be distributed to Laredo PD and the local sheriff department.

I wonder why certain nationalities get upset when you mention illegal alien. Illegal alien is not a race, it's a status. I guess they're just paranoid.

Two questions...1) How many seizures of this type have happened in the past? 2) Who are the two guys? I smell a setup designed to fulfill Calderon's proclamations.
