Sheriff honors pistol-packing drug store tech

JEFFERSONVILLE –Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff on Wednesday honored a pharmacy employee who fended off a would-be robber last week.

Schiff recognized Paul Hemmer of Jeffersonville for his role in thwarting the attempted robbery which occurred May 26th, at about 2:45 p.m.

A man wearing a ski mask and a blue sweat suit entered the pharmacy carrying a spear and a baseball bat and demanded that the employees “give him all the drugs”.

Hemmer, who is a pharmacy technician and was behind the counter at the time, pulled his licensed handgun and asked the bandit, “Do you really want to do this”? Seeing that the tables had been turned on him, the robber fled the pharmacy empty handed.

Hemmer provided Sheriff’s Deputies with a description that eventually led to the arrest of Robert Roach, 55, of Jeffersonville.

“Not only did Paul Hemmer defend himself, co-workers and a customer who was there at the time, he also prevented dangerous drugs from getting out on the street”, said Sheriff Schiff. “Mr. Hemmer acted courageously and with great restraint when he confronted this defendant and therefore, he should be honored as one of our hometown heroes.”

The sheriff presented Hemmer with a certificate of appreciation for his actions.

Never bring a spear and baseball bat to a gunfight.

It's like the robber who was shot, and found to have an unloaded gun. Well, that's good for the people there and the customers, but wasn't too good for the robber. His family really beat on the fact it was "unloaded".... like someone is going to stop and ask someone who's pointing a gun at them, "hey buddy, is that thing really loaded ? ".

    A spear? Really?

Methinks drugs may have been a problem for Mr. Roach even before the robbery attempt.

Good for the Sheriff. Every bit of positive press helps.

A 'yellow-sticky of appreciation' is a good gesture.

“Do you really want to do this”? .......that's a classic line!

Great Story! 55 years old and he's pulling a stunt like that? Yeah, drugs ruined his life!

It is clear that there needs to be a Federal Spear Control Act, complete with background checks at Spear shows. I can see the thread at SpearCarry.com "Where can I get pre-ban spears?.."
