    Teen killed in Antioch robbery

(06-08) 10:14 PDT ANTIOCH -- A 15-year-old suspect was shot and killed and a couple were critically wounded today during a predawn robbery of a home where marijuana was being grown, police said.

The triple shooting happened at 4:30 a.m. in a four-bedroom home on the 1300 block of Aster Drive occupied by a man and woman and two small children, said Antioch police Capt. Allan Cantando. Two rooms contained young marijuana plants, Cantando said.

The residents called 911, saying a group of teenagers had broken into their home through a back window. During a confrontation, the male homeowner and his wife were shot numerous times, police said. The female resident was shot as she ran down a hallway, authorities said.

The male homeowner shot and killed a 15-year-old suspect and held a 17-year-old suspect at gunpoint until police arrived, Cantando said.

The identities of the two teens were not immediately released.

Antioch and Pittsburg police, along with Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies, K-9 units and the California Highway Patrol, were searching for the third assailant, who escaped through the back window of the home near the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds. Authorities say he may be injured.

The residents were airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where they were listed in critical condition, said Sgt. Diane Aguinaga.

Two children, a 10-month-old girl and 2-year-old boy, were unhurt and are now in the custody of their grandmother, police said.

Police are investigating whether the youths were after the marijuana or money generated from the plants, Cantando said.

"Indoor marijuana grows are getting more common," Cantando said, but the operation at the house where the shooting occurred "was not on our radar."

The shooting comes three years after a deadly robbery in Pittsburg of a home filled with marijuana and owned by PC World magazine editor Rex Farrance. Farrance, 59, was shot and killed in the January 2007 home-invasion robbery and his wife was pistol-whipped. Three men were convicted in the case.

Farrance's family has said that the men decided to target the home after learning from his son's friend that marijuana was grown in the home and money would be readily available.

A similar invasion occurred just blocks from my home a few years ago. The occupants were executed and robbed. As with this situation, they were growing marijuana in their home.

He was maintaining an unlawful business there for production and distribution.
Unlawful by state and Federal laws...And a felony item at that.

Moral justification for HD, if not legal, goes out the window under such conditions.

The husband and wife (parents) should have thought to setup their plant program at some secondary location not where their children eat, sleep and play.

Follow up to this story: Invader was probably shot with his own gun

(06-09) 13:05 PDT ANTIOCH -- A 15-year-old boy killed when he broke into an Antioch home where marijuana was being grown apparently had his gun wrestled from him and was shot with it, police said today.

Keylow Colston of Oakland was shot by a 35-year-old man who lives in the four-bedroom home on the 1300 block of Aster Drive with a woman and the couple's two small children, police Sgt. Diane Aguinaga said.

Colston and two other youths broke in through a back window at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. During a chaotic confrontation, the couple were shot and wounded. The man then pulled the gun from the teenager and killed him, police believe.

Ballistics tests are still pending to confirm that Colston was shot with his own gun.

The man held a 17-year-old suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived, police said. A third suspect escaped.

The 17-year-old could face murder charges as an adult if prosecutors conclude that Colston was killed during a felony, authorities said. His name was not released pending a review of the case by Contra Costa County prosecutors.

The couple who own the home are in critical but stable condition at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. Both are expected to survive, authorities said. Their names have not been released.

Their two children, a 10-month-old girl and 2-year-old boy, were unhurt and are in the custody of their grandmother.

A search continues for the third suspect, who escaped through the rear window. Authorities say he may have been injured because a blood trail was found immediately outside.

The couple were growing marijuana plants in two rooms. Police are investigating whether the youths were after the marijuana itself or money generated from pot sales. They are also looking into whether the couple were growing the marijuana for medical reasons.
