The guy lost the prize money because one of his crew didn't have a fishing license. The guy who didn't have the license, his job was bait boy and keep the beer cold.

I fish in the Ocean City, NJ White Marlin Open every year. They are very strict about the rules. They should have checked this prior to fishing. Bad luck!

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) — The lack of a fishing license for one crew member may have cost a boat more than $900,000 in prize money in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in North Carolina.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reported the fisherman who caught a record-setting 883-pound blue marlin June 14 said tournament officials have stripped the Hatteras-based boat Citation of the title and money. Andy Thomossan says one crew member didn't have the required fishing license.
One of the boat's owners, Michael Topp, says the lack of a license was discovered during a lie detector test. The tournament requires the test for some of those on the boat that wins the top money.
The tournament said Sunday its board was withholding presentation of the prize money until it could research a possible rules violation.
Wow, that just blows! I'm surprised the guy without a license hasn't been used for bait yet.

The captain of the boat/team manager should have known and thought to _verify_ this days before and not just on the day of the event.
Stuff like this is SOP for any team sport where registration and/or licensing is required. Nevermind for a dollar value prize as big and important to the participants as this!
Not bad luck, bad planning and management.
IMHO the boat captain/team manager holds ultimate responsibility and by that blame for this error.

To paraphrase a little tidbit I took to heart in OCS - the leader is responsible for everything that his team does or fails to do. Sometimes that's an expensive lesson to learn...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
