BAD: Two Tampa, FL police officers murdered (Merged)

AMPA, Fla. (AP) — A massive statewide manhunt is under way for two suspects after two Tampa police officers were killed this morning following a shooting during a traffic stop near Interstate 4.

Officer David Curtis pulled over a red Toyota Camry around 2:15 a.m. because it didn't have a visible tag.

He called for backup after a background check revealed the male passenger in the car was wanted on a misdemeanor charge for writing a worthless check, Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

Six minutes after the traffic stop, a witness called to say Curtis and Officer Jeffrey Kocab had been shot.

Authorities arrived to find them lying on the ground. Kocab, 31, died. Curtis, also 31, was on life support this morning before he died, police said.

And it gets worse:

Kocab was a 14-month veteran with the force. His wife is nine months pregnant, police said.

Curtis, a father of four boys, has nearly four years with the department, police said.

Deepest sympathies to the families of the two fallen officers.

A Florida jury will take care of business in the unfortunate event that the killer survives to trial.

I'm more looking for a replay of Sheriff Judd's famous press conference from a few years back:

Not much to add from here in Tampa. It's a sad day.

Police said they are looking for Dontae Rashawn Morris, 24, and Cortnee' Nicole Brantley, 22, but have not named them as suspects.

Morris was released from state prison in April after serving two years on a drug conviction in Hillsborough County, records show.

In October 2005, he was arrested by Tampa police on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and robbery. He was found not guilty.

Today's incident began about 2:15 a.m. when Curtis pulled over the Toyota, which was missing a tag, near 50th Street and 23rd Avenue, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. The passenger was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant out of Jacksonville for a worthless check, so Curtis called for backup and Kocab came to the scene.
