MONTICELLO — Police are investigating a July 4th prank that resulted in serious injury to a man on York Avenue early Monday morning.

Police responded to the emergency room at Catskill Regional Medical Center and interviewed Jamal Colon, 31, who claimed that while celebrating the 4th of July at about 1 a.m., he had placed a box of .22 caliber bullets into a coffee can and then lit the can of bullets on fire.

He said he thought all of the bullets had gone off and when he picked up the can a bullet exploded severely wounding his left hand.

Colon is currently being treated at Catskill Regional Medical Center for the injury.

An investigation is ongoing and possible criminal charges are pending against Colon.

Actually there is a cure for stupid. There is only one problem with it though, Darwin is sometimes too slow getting to them.

The tragic part is he lived to try again someday. My glass is too far past half empty for me to think I can beat even .22 bullets in a Murphy's Law contest.

Maybe I'm missing something,but to explode a bullet the can had to of been extremely hot too hot to pick up with your bare hand,and it would not explode with enough force to exit a steel can,some moron shot himself and is trying to cover it up,wanta bet hes a convicted felon that can't even legally touch a firearm

In what world would ANYONE think that setting a can of ammunition on fire is a good idea? I mean you would have to be too stupid to walk and breathe at the same time. Anybody want to bet alcohol/drugs was involved?

This idiot and that guy who blew his arm off at the shoulder on July 4th.
The act in itself is ill advised, but could have been performed safely.

Ammunition exposed to fire outside of a barrel just pops as the casing is the weak link. It's pretty loud but generally harmless, within certain considerations related to fragmentation of the casing and whatever stuff might be around it in the immediate.
But just as with firecrackers that are thought to be a dud he should have _soaked_ the ammo in water FIRST and let it sit to cool before attempting to then handle it...Never mind handling it directly with his bare hands. Stupid.
