    Bear attack inside home...

Why do I feel this guy is going to have a Darwin moment some day? Perhaps because he was stupid enough to corner a bear in his home with a baseball bat?

Bear bites Bailey man inside home
BAILEY, Colo. - A Bailey man who discovered a bear inside his home early Thursday morning suffered bite wounds when he approached the animal in his basement, the Division of Wildlife official said.

51-year-old Jack Hansell says he and his family heard sounds in their kitchen shortly after midnight on Thursday morning and quickly discovered that a bear had entered their home. Hansell tried to approach the bear with a baseball bat and was attacked as the animal tried to get past him, the DOW said.

"My movement, or just the whole thing, probably scared him and he attacked and bit me in the leg. And I whacked him on the head with a bat," Hansell told us. "He wasn't being aggressive. He was just looking for food."

Hansell sustained a deep bite wound to his right leg and a scratch on his left leg.

A Division of Wildlife officer, along with deputies from the Park County Sheriff's Office, located the bear outside the home and killed it.

"The instruction we give our Wildlife Officers is clear: public safety is our first priority," said Reid DeWalt, Area Wildlife Manager. "Bears that enter homes are a threat to public safety. When we're dealing with aggressive or habituated wildlife, people come first."

Hansell was taken to Swedish Medical Center in Littleton and released later Thursday morning.

Most conflicts between people and bears involve some sort of food source. In this case, wildlife officers said the door to a garage containing accessible trash and a refrigerator was open. In addition, officers reported that the door from the garage into the home appeared to be not latching correctly.

The DOW reminds Colorado residents that bears can smell food from miles away, be it birdfeed, pet food, a greasy barbeque grill grate or accessible refuse and that bears which become habituated to people will seek such food sources out.
"My God David, We're a Civilized society."

"Sure, As long as the machines are workin' and you can call 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, and you scare the crap out of them; no more rules...You'll see how primitive they can get."

Bat...not too impressed (dumb). I don't think I have anything in my cabinet that I would use against a bear with confidence. My .357 maybe?!! Course we don't get too many bears here in the city. Up north would be different though.

LOL, you'd lock him in? Why not just leave the door open and let him get away?

Because Janq & Assoc. are outside, waiting on the 911 response clock to countdown to zero.
