California: Elderly man shoots, kills burglar in Colton home

Elderly man shoots, kills burglar in Colton home - San Jose Mercury News

COLTON, Calif.A 79-year-old man has shot and killed a burglar climbing into his Southern California home.

Colton police Detective Jack Morenberg said Saturday that Richard Contreras shot and killed 37-year-old Fidel Escanuelas (ess-kuh-NWAY'-luss) Thursday.

A police news release says Contreras saw a car back into the driveway of his Colton home, heard a noise in a bedroom, found Escanuelas climbing through a window and shot him once in the shoulder with a handgun. Escanuelas died at the scene.

Police say two other men, 24-year-old Trinidad Amador and 25-year-old Albaro Amaya, fled on foot. Amador was quickly caught and arrested on suspicion of burglary and conspiracy, and Amaya was arrested Friday.

Morenberg says he doesn't anticipate that Contreras will face any charges, but the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office will decide.

    Good for the old man.

Has anyone else noticed the amount of one shot kills in recent articles, not necessarily immediate stops, but dead none the less.

Nice! Those one shot kills are a plus too. Don't have to buy as much ammo when it's over. Those Hornady Critical Defense rounds must be filtering their way through the market well.

The reason you see this type of story with older guys is that most of them, unlike today, are vets. 40 years ago we had a draft where EVERYONE had to serve. Now with the volunteer Army we get a much better group of people, and YES I an a 60 year old vet, but it is a lot smaller segment of the population who has seen combat.

On the Veteran issue, I would like to see our gov't require every person 18 years old to be drafted into the military for at least 12 months. The would learn respect within the first few weeks and be able to practice that respect for the remaining induction time. At 18 we think we know everything there is to know. Does not take long in the military to realize that we did not know as much as we thought we did. LOL

Just wondering what caliber and make of fire arm the elderly man used?

If he is a vet, it would be sweet if it was a 1911 45acp.
