Police: Boy, 9, accidentally shoots and kills toddler - CNN.com

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A 9-year-old boy fatally shot his 2-year-old brother while playing with a gun in Los Angeles, authorities said late Saturday.

The boy found the gun in his house, said Sgt. Tim Walters of the Los Angeles Police Department. While playing with it, he accidentally shot the toddler, Walters said.

No charges will be filed, according to Walters.

Police said they responded to a call Friday and found the toddler suffering from a single gunshot wound to the torso. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he died later that night.

"Homicide detectives interviewed family members and determined that the gun had gone off while the 9-year-old was playing with it," police said in a statement.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, authorities said.

LA is already restrictive and full of antis. According to their gun laws this should have never happened ;)

If only the child was raised in a home where firearm safety was taught....takes the curiosity out of a found handgun.......shame.

Firearms should be locked up around children. Simple as that. (Yes, even if you gunproof your kids) By children I mean less than teens.

A sad tragedy for sure, but where were the parents and why weren't the gun(s) locked up?

I have to wonder if it was even a legal gun and with the pending notification of kin, where were the parents? Honestly my first thought was drug house.

No charges will be filed, according to Walters.

    - Ridiculous. Someone should be charged. There's absolutely no excuse for not locking up firearms around children.

California, hm? IIRC, the statutes come down very hard on adults that fail to secure their firearms in which this sort of result occurs. Dead children, all due to not caring enough to keep it holstered or locked up. No excuses for such negligence.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure someone will be charged as soon as they find the parents or whoever it was that left the gun lying around. Things like this just make me sick!

Loaded revolver or semi-auto with one in the chamber, locked and loaded and ready to shoot? Child Services and nagging nannies might whine, but sometimes it's just plain old painful but instructive ass-whipping time, which may take the innocent childish fun out of playing with Mom and Dad's guns.

Yup. There have doubtless been unnumbered deaths because of simple ignorance and blind curiosity that could have easily been corrected by (a) gun-proofing the children and (b) not sparing the rod. These two things are simple to do. Between the two of them, they can take the drama out of firearms from the outset, rendering them little more destructive than any other tool around the house.
