Weird: Teen Killed in Accidental Pellet Gun Shooting
Sounds like BS to me. Fired while loading...into chest?
Teen Killed in Accidental Pellet Gun Shooting

LOS ANGELES -- A teenage boy was accidentally killed while he and a friend were loading a pellet gun Saturday night, according to police.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. near 92nd Street and Stanford Avenue, in the Green Meadows neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
The two boys were loading a pellet gun outside a residence when the gun discharged and struck one of them in the chest, Los Angeles Police Officer April Harding said.
The victim was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, where he died. No arrests were made.
Police said they did not plan to file charges.
The names of the teenagers were not released. They were both about 14 years old, Harding said.

There is so little description in th account, its hard to say. With that said, "they" meaning a co-operative effort, one hands the pellet to the other who inserts it and somehow fires the weapon hitting the first boy.

The pellet gun I used to have worked like a single shot .22. Open bolt, insert pellet, close bolt, pump action. All I can think of is the muzzle was pointing at the one not doing the loading. Those things are pretty powerful.

While I don't own a pellet gun, that was my first thought as well. Must have been two dudes standing facing each other, one with gun pointed away from him while loading and of course the other guy was standing in front of him......two morons.

Many modern pellet guns are break action, hinged at the forward end of the receiver to load _AND_ to pump to create spring or pneumatic pressure.
As noted by Slim, the bottomline comes down to muzzle control.
Clearly they failed in following the three basic rules of safe firearm handling, but if they had noted and kept control of the muzzle they would have been fine.

When I was about 8 or 9 one kid had a pump up pellet gun, after about 20 pumps that thing would pack a wallop,I would say that if you were shot it would be about like getting hit with a 22,many critters learned too late

Regardless, knowing the four rules would've possiably negated this.
