Job hopeful from Virginia is slain in Oakland


(07-19) 18:06 PDT OAKLAND -- A Virginia computer engineer in the Bay Area for a job interview at Google Inc. was shot and killed in downtown Oakland by robbers who escaped with just $17, police said Monday.

Jinghong Kang, 45, of Fairfax, Va., a father of three sons, was shot near the corner of 19th and Webster streets at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Kang had gotten his teeth cleaned earlier in the day and had returned to his rental car with a dental hygienist when he was shot, police said.

His dental appointment was in preparation for a job interview that had been scheduled for Monday at Google in Mountain View, police said. Investigators said Kang and the hygienist knew each other because they had been members of the same church.

She was helping Kang enter directions back to his hotel into the car's GPS system when two men approached them, police said. The men demanded money, and one of them shot Kang, police said. The hygienist was not hurt.

What dentist is open at 11:30P and who makes an appt. to get a cleaning at 11:00P (cleaning takes just 30 minutes!)...And who goes to a foreign city for a job interview to then schedule a dental cleaning, as opposed to doing same at your own home dentist before leaving?

When I am in a foreign city on travel I generally stay at my hotel, and sleep.
Especially so when I am in a well known not exactly obscure city of crime and criminality.
As well, this harks to the DC.com rule of; You get in your car...You drive away. Do not sit in cars after dark!'

Sad that he got like this for any amount of money.
Even more sad though that this was completely unnecessary as related to the condition of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time, in very much the wrong town to be sitting around in cars after dark.

Now his family current and likely future generations to are in the immediate thrust into very real poverty, he being the primary bread winner.

Do not do this.

The way I read the article - he got his teeth cleaned earlier in the day, and he was returning to his car at 2330.

But yeah - don't sit in your car in strange places.

I would not call it an attempted robbery after all they did get $17 it's more like they murdered him because he did not have more. So much for liberals just comply and you will not be harmed.

Earlier in the day as in an hour or so prior.
It's not like he would have left his rental car there at Noon and then ride public transpo around for the entirety of his day, to return at _11:30P_ to a parking lot to then pick up his car and from there meet his dental hygenist to help him program his in car GPS (?). That makes no sense at all, on multiple levels.
Why rent a car at all if you're just going to park it and not drive it. As well what dentistry is open past 7P anyway, and why?

None of this makes any sense as related to regular world....Aside from the getting run up on and robbed while sitting in parked cars after dark (anywhere be it strange places or your own business parking lot).

To whihc I'd stated, get dental work/cleaning done at home _prior_ to leaving...Or schedule the work during day time hours.
Again Oakland is not at all unknown for being a city of high crime...AND it is also well known that the Asian community has been particular prey of criminals for years now in Oakland.

Once more, do not do this.

What is a grown man doing in a parked car at 11:30P with a female?
Further how many professionals do we as adults know that are open for business at after hours _and_ that escort our clients to their car _and_ who advise them on tech of how to program their GPS when the client is in town to get a job at a major tech company (Google!) and is himself a tech person _and_ how many females escort their customer/patient to their vehicles in the dark after hours to then get into the car with them to discuss programming their car?
Also note how they do not indicate attempt to rob the female, just the male.

I'd bet a box of WWB that the persons who shot him saw them at/in the car, and from there sit in the car pressing buttons...And by that they then took advantage of the situation betting this was something along the lines of a guy referred to as 'John'.

We are all adults and we all have been out of town on business or for a trip of some sort before.
