    Laser guns: Now for real

FARNBOROUGH - The super-weapon has long been featured in science fiction and in movies such as Star Wars - but now it's for real.

At the Farnborough Air Show in southern England, the American firm, Raytheon, has unveiled its Laser Close-In Weapon System (LCIWS). This is a solid-state laser whose 50kw beam is capable - the company has a video to prove it - of shooting down an unmanned aerial vehicle from a few kilometres away.

    Star Wars is here!

Maybe with the introduction of laser guns, it will put the caliber wars to rest once and for all. The next big conflict will probably be over laser color, etc. Ha-ha.

What's the hold up on the light sabers?

Stupid Raytheon! They should have known better than to carry an underpowered red laser! We all know that green ones have superior knock down power! Sorry, I couldn't resist!

That is pretty cool, mark another one up for American firepower!

Nice, no need to worry about bullet drop, windage or lead, just point and shoot.

I wonder how long this had been a reality, and we are just now learning about it? It's not like the military or contractors to release secrets when they are still cutting edge.

You laugh but laser color is very important. It is related to wavelength, which is related to energy. Different color lasers do have different properties.

BTW, you want a real laser weapon? Check this out. $300 for a handeld laser that can set living flesh aflame.

LOL. Was just getting ready to say something similar. I wonder how rain would effect it? I wonder what would happen if you shot one against a highly reflective surface?

That's what Aviation Leak and the Washington Compost are for...

No, this really is pretty new stuff; in development for quite some time, but just now reaching fruition. Very cool.

I wonder whether the risk far "downstream" from the target is just as high as at the target itself, whether they've figured out a way to focus the beam or modulate it in such a way that it won't zap everything on the other side of the target. Imagine if mounted on a fighter jet, in which every missed shot at another jet below simply ends up strafing people/buildings on the ground to pieces.
