The tire iron was DEFINITELY a reason for the use of deadly force. This incident however, argues for hi cap mags.

How we behave as gun owners is important. Posturing and threatening does not serve us well in the public eye.
Unfortunately, there really is no safe direction to fire at that location and if you draw, you might well have to shoot to defend yourself - McDonalds to the north, the gas station itself to the east (or if on the backside a quiznos and starbucks), another shopping center to the south, a catholic church to the west and Residences to the southwest all stick frame, stucco clad buildings that won't resist anything bigger than a .25 auto. If it was someone who's life I valued more than that of a total stranger, of course I'd draw, if the victim was also a total stranger - bad luck bub, I'd dial 911 and try to be a good witness. There's no way I'm going to chance killing some innocent kid for some guy who might be just as much of a dirtbag as the guys beating him.

Not surprising they all pleaded not guilty.
It's so arbitrary and ludicrous, to believe that having survived a previous encounter equates to "being under a specific threat." Reality is, life is worth defending at ALL times, not ONLY after having been beaten to within an inch of your life.... require the applicant demonstrate a compelling need such as transporting large amounts of cash, needing to be in remote areas or being under a specific threat.
The bad news is, this man was defenseless against a group of thugs. The good news is, he now fits the criteria for a qualified applicant for a concealed carry permit.
I don't see California going shall-issue anytime soon, let alone putting a clause into the state constitution that upholds the right of citizens to be armed. The Heller and McDonald rulings were the first step, but until we get the arbitrary nature of might-never-issue blasted out of existence, we'll still have citizens caught with their pants down whenever violent felons decide it's time to "roll." It should be simple, that innocent life matters at all times, and that such life is threatened at all times by armed/aggressive felons in which citizens have no effective means of defense.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.
Explain: How does disarming victims reduce the number of victims?

We're not going through the legislature, not with a gerrymandered Democrat majority in the state legislature and assembly (with the active aid of Republican incumbents who were more interested in preserving their seats than serving their constituency). There are a number of lawsuits currently in the pipe for which we anticipate favorable rulings in the wake of MacDonald Vs. Chicago so we'll just have to see. Some, like the Sheriff in my county will likely grumble but go along with a ruling that voids "Good Cause", while Lee Baca in neighboring L.A. County will almost certainly fight tooth and nail.

Unfortunately, things like that happen way too often.
