I would imagine it went something like this............

"Get on da flo batch or I'll crack one in y'ass!" This is "felon" for "Hello, this is a robbery and I would like that gun and all of your money please." Then he just took it.

This is what happens when one carries a gun as a talisman and NOT a defensive tool....

If you don't have the mindset and training to use it....you WILL lose.

Either he was open carrying, gun behind counter on shelf,or OWB and when he laid down shirt rode up showing holster, this is when pocket carry or IWB may have prevented the gun being stolen,or a BUG would have worked out since BG wouldn't think you have 2 guns

The odds are it was behind / under counter. (No OC in Ca.) Quite possible that BG may have known it was there from a prior visits and the clerk may have revealed it to someone in some fashion. Speculation but +1 on having a BUG.

I believe in most places in the USA, your store is a lot like your home, that is, you can open carry there if you wish, regardless of the law on the outside. But, CA is a weird place wrt gun laws.

In any case, the clerk's lack of SA was the real problem, open carry or not.
Anti-gunners seem to believe that if we just pass enough laws, we can have utopia. Unfortunately, utopia is NOT one of our choices.

Maybe he had told the BG on a previous day that he carried for protection. Just speculation.

The dirtbag may have been wearing a masked covering on his face, but it's hard to cover a 5'2" 250# body...he shouldn't be hard to see around town.OMO

"Gimmie all yo money and a bag of chips, and a candy bar, and don't make it one of the little ones either!"
Wait it's California, sorry, "My name is Jamal and I'll be your robber tonight, may I have your gun?"
Police lost him in a foot chase. (not really, I made that up.)

It looks like the clerk was going to make a move with the gun in the drawer, then lost his edge and thought better of it, when the bg turned his attention to the clerk.
BG then found the gun in the drawer.
